Doctor of veterenary medicine |
wildlife researcher |
A career that I dream of pursuing is veterinary medicine. Biology is a subject that I have always been fascinated by and I have always excelled in biology courses throughout high school. I have never really gotten excited when picturing myself in a career however to be a veterinarian and be able to help animals every day would be a dream come true. I have known for a long time that I want to go into a healthcare related post secondary program, but also have a love for animals. I think that a veterinarian would be a perfect balance, and something that I would actually enjoy studying. I know that there would be many challenges if i were to try and pursue this career. Dissecting and operation on animals is something that many people may have difficulty doing however I feel that this would not bother me. I grew up seeing many procedures and operations preformed on my father, and have never been bothered by blood or anything like that. Another hurdle is that the program for your doctor of veterinary medicine is extremely competitive. I think that because biology is such an interest of mine and that I'm so determined that I would work very hard and do my best to pursue this dream. One of few post-secondary pathways which can get you your DVM is the University of Guelph. They offer the DVM program as well as many co-op oppertunities and all prerequisate courses. To become a doctor of veterinary medicine I would first have to complete two years of an undergraduate degree including 8 of the required courses for the DVM program. An example of this would be the biology course, where you would choose majors like animal sciences or zoology. You would also need references and practical hands-on experience with animals and veterinarians in your application. I would also likely need some sort of business course if I wanted to open my own veterinary office, In which case I would need at least one more year of education. Ideally after lots hands on experience I would be able to open my own veterinary office wherever I decide I want to live. People have pets all over the world, so there would be job opportunities almost anywhere. |
Because the DVM program is so competitive, I think that another suitable job for what I am passionate about would be a wildlife researcher. For this job I would also take a 4 year biology course at the University of Guelph and major in wildlife biology and conservation. With this degree I would be able to apply at different provincial parks like Algonquin park. Wildlife researchers are responsible for provide research for projects from across Ontario and around the world.
Doing jobs like this outdoors would also be very interesting for me, and it would be nice to get a job doing this at any Ontario parks. |
